What Time Is Love? (The Monster Attack Mix)

The Monster Attack Mix is an unreleased, slighty more beat-driven version of The KLF’s original What Time Is Love? which adds some additional screams and monster noises (hence its name). Its drum pattern is similar to that of the remixes which appeared on KLF004R.

According to The KLF’s 1989 Completeist List only three copies of KLF004M have been pressed. Jimmy, Bill and Youth reportedly each owned a copy. Rumour has it they took the record to Land Of Oz one night and asked Paul Oakenfold – who had played the original every week – to give it a test run. Their new version went down badly on the dancefloor, though, so Bill and Jimmy decided to scrap it.

The Monster Attack Mix also appeared as the B-side on the (equally unreleased) Love Trance and a couple of bootlegs, most notably as a bonus track on the initial CD release of the White Room Soundtrack.

Even though none of the alleged three copies have since appeared on eBay, a brief feature in Record Collector from Feb 2005 put its estimated value at £500.

  1. The Land of Oz mix is quite different to the Monster Attack Mix. I can’t find the same mix anywhere else but the distorted version on all 3 of the different White Room movie scores.

Theory: This was the working version of the Stadium House mix and may actually be the inspiration for the Stadium House series.

Pointers: The Land of Oz mix is littered with samples from the Chill Out & Space albums & the final Stadium House mix keeps a space LP sample for the outro. The live Land of Oz version has organic Crowd noise/cheers and this may have inspired the boys to build on that & add the live elements & MCs for the full stage show feeling?

I also often wonder if AP had anything to do with this mix as it is so random sample heavy. Him & Jimmy were doing a lot of KLF/ORB crossover stuff at that time and he was also a regular feature at the Land of Oz back then too. If this was indeed mixed live then I feel it more likely that it was Jimmy & Alex rather than Jimmy & Bill.

Just my stoned musings and I could be (and probably are) well wide of the mark.
Anyway, great site. Used it for years for reference but only noticed the comment sections recently. I have a YouTube channel that gets linked from this site quite often.
    All the best.
    Rex.
