The letters \u2018KLF\u2019 stood for many things, which changed many times throughout the band’s life-span. The first documented occurrence is in 1987, when the moniker \u2018Kopyright Liberation Front\u2019 was mentioned on their record releases. But over the years up to the 1992 retirement, they always got asked this question in interviews and were always making up new names. One much-quoted line is \u201cWe\u2019re on a quest to find out what it means. When we find out, we can stop what we\u2019re doing now.\u201d Various examples of these names are: \u2018Kings of the Low(er) Frequency\u2019, \u2018Kool Low Frequency\u2019, \u2018Keep Looking Forward\u2019, \u2018Kevin Likes Fruit\u2019 and so on, but the usually accepted definition is \u2018Kopyright Liberation Front\u2019.<\/p>\n

Possible Origins<\/h3>\n

The next question is how did this name come about. The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu came from the Illuminatus books, and possibly to some extent the name KLF was influenced by these as well. Over recent years there\u2019ve been a number of organisations using an acronym ending -Liberation Front. In the 1960\u2019s was the NLF \u2013 National Liberation Front \u2013 the North Vietnamese resistance to the USA supported by \u2018hippies\u2019 in the US. In the 1980\u2019s was the ALF \u2013 Animal Liberation Front \u2013 British radicals who became famous for freeing animals from experimental labs. There\u2019s also the Kasmiri Liberation Front. Then in Illuminatus! there is the ELF \u2013 Erisian Liberation Front \u2013 leading the forces of chaos against order.<\/p>\n

So it could follow that for sampling in the 80\u2019s and 90\u2019s there\u2019s the KLF \u2013 Kopyright Liberation Front \u2013 freeing Mu(sic) from copyright laws and using past sounds as much as you want. There are many other ..LF\u2019s too, but we reckon those are the important ones that led to Bill and Jimmy choosing the name KLF.<\/p>\n

Finally, Jamm!n [one of the original FAQ\u2019s contributors \u2013 Ed.] adds: \u201cWhy Kopyright in KLF was spelt with a K\u2026 Well, there are three reasons I can think of, all\/some\/none of which may relate to the real reasons:<\/p>\n

  1. CLF sounds considerably less cool.<\/li>\n
  2. The letter K has many mystical connections. Too many to list here, but it is linked to certain grams in I Ching and Tarot amongst others. KLF aren\u2019t the only band to spot this; for example mystic-guru-wannabes Kula Shaker with their album \u201cK\u201d. \u201cK\u201d was also the letter used to mark barrels of the strongest brewed drink available, and hence is now the brand name of an 8.4% abv cider. Decide the relevance of that for yourself.<\/li>\n
  3. Kopyright has been used in Discordian circles for some time to draw attention to the complete absence of Copyright. The standard rubric is something like:
